CORNISH-COWING 177 CORNISH RICHARD CORNISH, probably one of the Gorges Company, was an early settler of Weymouth. He had lot No. 16 granted to him .'on the East side of the fresh pond next to Mrs. Richards her mill." This record was copied out of the "old Towne book" 2 Feb. 1651, and presented in Court in 1667. (Suffolk Court Files, 815.) At a Court holden at Newe Towne (Cambridge), 5 Aug. 1634, Richard Cornish gave a bond of L10 for his "wyves" personal appearance at Court in October following. (Record of the Court of Assistants, 2: 47,) The record for October does not show that she appeared, but at a Court holden at Cambridge, 5 June, 1638, Katherine, the wife of Richard Cornish, appeared and was fined. Her fine was respited, 4 Dec. 1638. (Ibid. 2: 74, 79.) Governor Winthrop, under the date, Feb. 1644-45, says: "One Cornish, dwelling some time in Weymouth, removed to Acomenticus (Agamenticus, now York), for more outward accommodation, and in the last month was taken up in the river, his head bruised and a pole sticking in his side, and his canoe laden with clay found sunk." (Win- throp's History, 2: 210.) He was murdered, and his wife, "being a lewd woman," was tried for the murder, convicted and executed.
